Course Overview
Participants will embark on a guided dragonboat journey from JYRC approximately a 40 NM distance, covering key fundamentals of paddling techniques, navigation, situational awareness, and group coordination in a real open sea expedition setting.
Course Objectives
- Demonstrate proper dragonboat paddling techniques (forward stroke, synchronization, endurance pacing)
- Understand and apply basic water safety and rescue awareness
- Work effectively as a team in a dragonboat setting
- Develop situational awareness in open-water environments
- Build confidence in long-distance expedition paddling
- Get to experience sailing with a dragonboat
Course Structure (2D1N)
Day 1: Skills Development & Expedition Paddle
Introduction & safety briefing and navigation theories
Dragonboat familiarisation
Basic paddling techniques and synchronization
Controlled practice session
Expedition paddle estimate 20NM for Day 1
Check-in and overnight stay at Floating Resort
Day 2: Consolidation & Return Paddle
Morning Breakfast, warm-up
Advanced paddling drills (efficiency, endurance, coordination)
Use of sail
Return paddle to JYRC
Course debrief and assessment
Key Learning Components
Paddling Technique: Stroke mechanics, timing, and efficiency
Team Coordination: Communication, rhythm, and crew roles
Water Safety: Risk awareness, basic rescue concepts with and without safety boat
Expedition Skills: Endurance paddling and navigation (use of Navionics)
Assessment & Certification
Successful participants will attain the relevant SeaOPS Dragonboat Star certification (1–3 Star level depending on competency).
